With Thanks

Some say that novel writing is a lonely business. At one’s desk on late nights and in early mornings, the steaming coffee cup and convoluted thoughts are often your only companions. While that is true, I’ve also been blessed with stupendous support, advice and help from a dazzling array of gifted, caring people. I hope you all know what you’ve meant, and mean, to me. My gratitude is like that coffee cup — very warm and close to overflowing. First, I thank beyond words Kim McArthur, Canada’s most dynamic publisher and person extraordinaire. Thank you for believing in me. The same goes for Ann Ledden, without whom Hot Springs would never have become what it is. I also send my appreciation to Janet, Jim, Taryn, Thea and all the fantastic team at McArthur and Company. To my wonderful and talented editor Leah Fairbank: you made Hot Springs and me better — coincidences happen for a reason. I am deeply grateful for the intelligent and energetic assistance of Sam Hiyate and his associates, and thanks are also extended to the personable and painstaking Pamela Erlichman. I must also not forget to thank in advance the hard-working publishers’ reps and the wonderful people who run and staff those glorious churches of the mind and my favorite haunt – bookshops.

Closer to home, Alan Bryce has long provided me with wisdom and unyielding support, and Warren Arbuckle gets special mention for his creative mind and insights. Andy Eastham and Julia Caranci were thoughtful readers, as was political historian Mark Ledbetter. I also received help and encouragement from Eric Lundy and Steve Barnes (on the music), fabulous Philippa White and her photos, marvelous Maryum Bowman, Mark Colby, Annie Horsburgh, the talented Solveig, Bob and Kelly, John Ledden, all the beautiful Roses, Robert Zacharias, Cliff McNeil-Smith, the Tanners, Lynne Jordon, Sharon McLeay, the top dogs (Helen, Robin, Jordan, Zandra, Davin, James, Paul)  at YellowDawg.com, as well as from Marilyn Herbert and all the cool people at the equally cool Book Club in a Box. Thanks also to Sarah Mercedes Ghosh, Brandon Leudke (and Finn, who was very well-behaved). Further from home, I'd also like to mention Jeff Olson for his work on my behalf.

More musical friends include Laurie Perullet, Keith Loreth, Sharon Lee, Sue McGregor, Alan Maybee, Carmen Doyle, Ricky de Souza, not to mention the Bryces, the Lorenzo and Casciola and Coleman clans, as well as the Pueters (and, Menuccia, you left early but you still deserve a mention).

Special thanks go to my family, of course: mother Rosemary (who inculcated a love of words at an early age), late father Stan, sister Janina and brother Tony and family. Thank you, Ken, for being a loving son. And Kimiko has been an unwavering pillar of support from day one — your amazing talent and warmth of heart astonish me daily.
