Chapter 1-“It’s all beneath the surface.”

PART I – Hot Springs Island, BC, Canada
Chapter 1 iNovel Link

 “It’s all beneath the surface.”

Jason Chiron is the main protagonist of Hot Springs. He’s also a musician. He plays guitar and piano - taught to him by his father, Dada,  a very accomplished musician in his own right  who plays more than ten instruments which he learned growing up on Cape Breton Island. At the end of Chapter I, Jason takes a  ferry from Vancouver to Hot Springs Island. He goes out on deck to look over the rail at the indigo ocean – beautiful but opaque. He knows that the water is hundreds of feet deep in this spot and thinks about everything under the surface. This inspires him to write a new song called, appropriately, Under the Surface.

Under the Surface

Words & Music by Jason Chiron

INTRO: F x 4

G F

It’s all beneath the surface

G F

In the places we can’t see

G F

In the darkness and the shadows

C F C

Underneath, underneath

Dreams, they are the ripples

On the surface of our sleep (PAUSE)

Fathoms and fouled anchors

That’s the deep, oh that’s the deep

*CHORUS
G D C

Everything’s under the surface

G D C

The places that we’ve never been

G D F C

Everything’s under the depths and the dark

C D F

Everything we’ve ever dreamed

You’ll never  know what’s down there

It’s the unknown that we fear

Engulfing, all surrounding

Far and near, oh far and near

Verse (done as solo)
*CHORUS

Rivers, lakes, the same thing

Weeds tugging at our feet

As eerie, the subconscious

Oh so deep, it’s oh so deep

*CHORUS

(thanks to Steve Barnes for his 12-string playing on the recording)

While living in Japan, I had a weekly ritual of going to an Onsen. It was my favourite part of the week and I really did wash my stress and emotional dirt away. I truly associate my time in Japan with pure happiness and I remember just feeling healthy and vibrant after a bath. Reading your book, I am revisiting those sensations and my heart truly aches just thinking back. Your book has awakened those memories and I wish I could snap my fingers and return. I have been back in Montreal since 2004 and there aren't any baths nearby. Thank you for writing this book. Loving it so far... I actually look forward to the next chapter...

I am so impressed with the story and how the author refers to familiar places. The ability to go on line and listen to the songs is so fabulous. Sometimes I find it hard to sit and read a book right through, this makes it very interesting to have the other options to keep my attention. I appreciate the creative way that Steve put this together.

I am so familiar with Saltspring Island. We spent many weeks there with friends who owned a lodge, and one of our daughters worked there in the summers. Your novel brings it all back. We live in White Rock, and still see the island in the distance. Loved your new concept. My favourite book so far. Alice

I loved your book. It is so descriptive and well written that the reader feels he's actually there. My family and I have been travelling to a beautiful peaceful little town called Nakusp in B.C. and this area has several hotsprings which your story brings home. Sometimes the reader feels a little sad or lost after finishing a well written story so your interactive web site really adds a whole other dimension to the story.
